In this short series I am going to be consolidating the list of Degu Enclosures from another page on the site into the main blog, then removing the old page.
David's enclosure from Switzerland - David has a small self built hutch attached to an outdoor wire cage. It is filled with many natural materials such as rocks, dirt, and freshly growing plants. David's enclosure is probably one of the best examples of keeping degus outdoors. Pictures and info about this enclosure after the break.

Thomas' enclosure in the UK is a mesh fronted, timber framed structure making it very sturdy. It is big with lots of space for running. Thanks for the submission Thomas! Here is my own personal enclosure. I am from the UK and my enclosure is a glass fronted MDF enclosure with a small balcony space for easy access to the degus. After the break! Here is Marks enclosure in the UK. A very tall glass fronted enclosure with storage space underneath for all those degu goodies! Pictures and info about this enclosure after the break. First up is Stormsong's enclosure from Norway. A nicely painted mesh fronted large enclosure with removable trays. I would also like to thank Storm of the many pictures she has given and continues to provide to this website! Pictures and info about this enclosure after the break. Some pictures of my degus and their sand level - this level is a half level at the top of the enclosure with a balcony area.
Check it out if you want some inspiration for your own sand level! Here is a great tip for people who have either a metal cage or mesh fronted enclosure! Many of us like to be able to have fresh plants available for our degus. The problem is, if you put the plant into the degus enclosure is often destroyed within two days or so. There are a large variety of plant pots that come with hooks or clips (often for garden use) that can be used to attach your plants to the outside of the cage... ...Read more So you have just bought / adopted degus - great!
The first and in many ways most important aspect of keeping degus is the enclosure, where your degu is (most likely) going to spend the entirety of its life. This is an important and expensive decision however you go about it, but once this challenge has been conquered the rest of your degus requirements will fall into place so easily. Choosing the right enclosure will prevent many issues from arising. The right enclosure reduces the risk of degus fighting, allows them the opportunity to exercise (and therefore is related to health), allows them to exhibit a much more natural behavioural pattern and much more. I am a strong advocate of wooden enclosures (and just a little bias!) but both metal and wooden enclosures have their advantages. After the break I will attempt to sum up the pros and cons of each to help you better make best the decision for you and your furry friends. So last week I talked about the planning and design phase, the budget and aspects of the project that changed.
With that in mind - part two of the review! Lets dive right in to this picture brimming post! |
