In this short series I am going to be consolidating the list of Degu Enclosures from another page on the site into the main blog, then removing the old page. David's enclosure from Switzerland - David has a small self built hutch attached to an outdoor wire cage. It is filled with many natural materials such as rocks, dirt, and freshly growing plants. David's enclosure is probably one of the best examples of keeping degus outdoors. Pictures and info about this enclosure after the break. Facts about the enclosure
What kind of accessories do you have in your enclosure David? Clay tubes, bark, horizontal branches (used as runways or for resting), fresh twigs with leaves, stones, green fodder / fresh herbs and flowers, many species of living plants, some young nut trees (sown by the degus), spiders, ants, cockroaches (Ectobius sp.), etc. David's Testimonial on DIY housing "I started my outdoor keeping in summer/autumn 2009. My degus lived there during the warm seasons (spring to autumn) for the following years. As a base, I used a small and robust rabbit cage and built an additional wooden shelter with a small clay-straw chamber which the degus used as a nest; insulated for refuge during cold nights. For food I used mainly fresh herbs, flowers and twigs / leaves and added only seeds (bird food mixtures) and whole nuts (walnut, hazelnut).
