Hey everyone, after a big shopping trip and a spend of £60.00(!) - I have come back from Pets at Home with some suitable degu products. Click to read more after the break; I will be giving a write up on some of the things I have purchased. (My apologies in advance for some of the pictures, my camera had some trouble adjusting to the light this evening.) Degu Products - Mammals Ok, I have decided to start with the mammals section in Pets at Home. Some of you who use the store already may be familiar with the layout, from my experience all stores are divided into sections, the sections we are interested in are:
The 1st product is the chinchilla nesting box. It is made from some kind of plywood. Some owners do not offer these to thier degus - for fear of the glues used to make the ply being consumed by the degus while they chew. I personally have found no problems with this product, my degus tend not to be interested in chewing it. If you are concerned about offering this product to your degus, I offer the same advice about all products:
This product retails at £8.69 in Pets at Home Next up we have the large play sticks, these are useful for more multiple reasons. I use them to:
This product retails at £6.79 in Pets at Home, discounts available for bulk buys.
The bedding pictured (above) is a medium bale of Pets at Home wood shavings. In store, thier "degu safe bedding table" lists this substrate as unsuitable. I do not understand why this is the case. This bedding is completely degu safe, and possibly the most cost effective method of bedding for your cage. You can also get this bale in lavender scented and lemon scented. Or, you can have coloured shavings - blue or purple. I personally prefer plain, it helps me to create nicer natural setups. The bales also come in four sizes; small, medium, large and extra large. This bale retails for £4.49 in Pets at Home.
The products I have listed are by no means the only suitable products for degus in Pets at Home, I have simply selected some of my favourites and some things I needed to buy. I could not afford to buy every suitable degu product in Pets at Home! Which brings me to my next point; cost.
All the products I have listed here are a little over-priced. Some of you may think me mad for spending £60 on these products when I could have shopped around for a cheaper deal. If money is tight for you, I recommend looking at online pet stores that may provide better deals. You may also be able to find some of the food and dry it yourself - I do this during the summer. I personally use Pets at Home out of convenience, everything I need is under one roof, in a layout I am familiar with, not only this but I live next door ;) - I can simply pick up what I need whenever I need it. Thanks for reading everyone! Hopefully this has opened your mind somewhat to try different products with your degus that you had not thought of before! I will be posting some info on the items I purchased from the reptile and bird sections at a later date, so stay tuned!
