Hello everyone! Today I wanted to share with you my top 5 degu enclosures. These are all enclosures that have inpsired me on my degu journey, I hope they inspire you too! I would also like to add that these enclosures are in no particular order. Click past the break to see some excellent habitats. The Degu Station The first enclosure I would like to start with comes from Nightwishraven999, as this is also where my journey into degu keeping began. Many degu owners have seen Jordan's work and I imagine everyone that reads this article is already fairly familiar with presence on the internet. If you have not already watched his videos on youtube, I highly recommend it. I have followed his work very closely over the years and used many of his ideas as inspiration for my own enclosure. It is true that without his youtube videos, I would be much further behind in my degu journey. His enclosure is both spacious and interesting and has evolved much over the years. I have always loved the glass front and balcony as it makes for easier viewing and access of the degus. Jordan's current work has been aimed at creating a more natural aesthetic within the enclosure, this has involved testing different beddings and reducing cage clutter to provide degus with more running space. You can continue to follow his work on the Degus International Website and International Forum. Apology's wooden enclosure The next enclosure takes the idea of recreating the degus natural environment 1 step further. Apology has created an enclosure very similar to many other wooden enclosures with one exception - the tunnel system. Apology has created a tunnel system for her degus on the bottom level of her enclosure. The tunnel system is very reminiscent of the degus natural habitat. Along side this sand is used on the bottom level so her degus have permenant access to cleaning. The tunnel system has turned out very nicely, I was truly astonished when I first saw this enclosure. Apology has her own website too; the site is in german but is a very interesting read should you have the time to translate it. Apart from the focus of a tunnel system, the enclosure is also very spacious and interesting. Floor enclosure from germany Unfortunately there is not much to say about this enclosure. Apology directed me to these pictures after I had contacted her about her efforts. I love the enclosure because of the large open space for the degus to run in. I also love the plants in the enclosure, as they add colour and a natural feel. The tunnel system appears to stretch right around the edge of the enclosure which is also very interesting.
David Küpfer's outdoor degu enclosure David has done an excellent job of creating a successful outdoor degu enclosure. The outdoor enclosure is excellent as it allows his degus plenty of space to explore their ever changing surroundings. They also have access to a varied and plentiful diet due to the plants grown inside the enclosure. Davids website goes into plenty of detail on keeping degus outside including: diet, weather, technical requirements etc. Davids enclosure contains a bounty of natural accessories such as: branches, fresh flora, dead flora, rocks, digging substrate and clay tunnels. He also has constructed an indoor nest box for his degus to sleep in and escape the weather when required. David's enclosure has been a huge inspiration to me and has inspired me to try and create a more natural environment within my own enclosure. click the pictures to enlarge. Stormsong's enclosure Last but not least is Stormsong's enclosure. Her journey started around the same time as mine and we have both been making similar progress. We have both gone for slightly different routes when it came to the final build. Her enclosure is large and spacious for her degus, it is well ventilated and has a deep base for burrowing activities. Her enclosure looks very much like a piece of furniture and I would very much love to have something like this inside my house. Her enclosure has given me the itch to paint mine! I love the amount of doors at the front of the enclosure, I can only imagine it is a dream to clean with the easy access and removable levels. Storm is from Norway and has also published a site with many useful tips and articles. I cannot wait to see the further progress from Storm in the future and wish her the best of luck! I would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone for reading this article and a massive thank you to everyone who allowed me to talk about their enclosures.
Im hoping that I will soon be able to offer further and varied advice on building enclosures. Unfortunatly, once you have finished building an enclosure, it is difficult to offer further details on the build. I am lucky to be in touch with many degu owners and I am hoping that they will be able to offer some guest posts at a later date - detailing their experiences with home builds. So stay tuned!
