Today I spent about 2 hours doing a major overhaul on the degu's enclosure. I removed all the accessories and old bedding and hoovered out every nook and cranny. I disinfected all the toys, shelves, ledges and walls. I cleaned the glass front of the enclosure and hoovered all around the base. I am seriously beginning to consider getting a job in a zoo! Anyway, I refilled the enclosure with fresh bedding and re-arranged the toys. The good news is that its (raining!?) summer! So all the trees and plants are back in full leaf, this means I was able to take some foliage from the nearby trees to add to the degu's home. Click to see more after the break! I have added Birch and Oak today, I think it looks great. It really adds that forest(y) feel to the enclosure. Not only does it look great but provides stimulation for the degus - they can eat the leaves too. On the bottom level is a climbing frame of branches; there is also some flat running space on the floor. I have provided a nest box for hiding, the top of which acts as a flat platform to place treats for the degus. In the corner of this level is a large pile of hay for the degus to forage in. I have also hidden tunnels within the hay for hiding.
On the second level is the 2 wheels and some large tree stumps. The stumps create small caves and hiding places for the degus to sleep or store food. On the third level are my favourite accessory; the terracotta roof tiles. They act as tunnels and provide access to the lower levels. Without anything covering the top of the access holes, all the saw dust wood get moved to the bottom of the enclosure. There are also large quantities of oak tree leaf and large thick branches to access them. Finally the top level (with the balcony) has the food bowels (filled with natural mix) and water bowels. There are some java branches and a ledge here for the degus to perch. You can click here to see my last article on creating a forest. Thanks for reading!
